Susan Beckett-Mitchell

Susan thoroughly enjoys working at Spelman College where she found her work family in 2017. As the Foundation Relations Director, Susan supports faculty, staff, and leadership in securing partnerships with private and corporate foundations to further the mission of the College. Previously, Susan served as a non-profit executive director, bilingual educator at a wildlife refuge, and climate and environmental justice program manager at a large state school. Susan got her BS in Wildlife Biology from Colorado State University and her MPA from University of Colorado Denver. Susan is from Tallahassee, Florida and she loved her childhood full of time at the beach and climbing trees. She moved to Colorado for college and stayed there for thirteen years, enjoying all the outdoor and adventure activities the mountain state had to offer. Susan moved to Georgia in 2013 to be closer to family and soon met her now husband. Susan loves to spend time with her family: her son William, husband Anthony, two dogs, Emma and Ripley, and Zoomie the fish. Most weekends you can find the family in the backyard, at the nature preserve, or spending time with grandparents, cousins, aunties, and uncles. Susan enjoys gardening with native plants that support local wildlife, and vegetables to support her family. She also has lifelong love of reading, traveling across the globe, and relaxing on the beach. Susan is excited for her family to join Westside because of the strong sense of community and belonging. She was drawn to the school because of is focus on project-based learning that instills curiosity and a love of learning for all students. Susan joined the Westside board in March of 2025.
