Defining Gifted and Talented Students
At Westside, we recognize that intellectually advanced and creatively gifted students possess unique learning characteristics, interests, and capabilities. Gifted and talented students are those who demonstrate exceptional intellectual or creative abilities, a high degree of motivation, and excel in specific academic fields. They require special instruction and services to reach their full potential, aligning with the definition provided by the Atlanta Public Schools.
Our Approach
Our Gifted and Talented Education program offers differentiated instruction to address these unique needs. It provides opportunities for gifted students to engage with intellectual peers and participate in classes that extend and enrich the Georgia core curriculum.
Evaluation Process for the Gifted Program
Westside conducts annual screenings for all enrolled students to identify those who may benefit from gifted education. The screening and testing processes include:
- First Look Screening:
- For students without current gifted testing data.
- Automatic Screening: Review of MAP scores and Georgia Milestones EOG/EOC results.
- Teacher Screening: Observation using the “Traits, Aptitudes, and Behaviors” (TABs) instrument.
- Parent Referral: Parents may refer their child using the Gifted Parent Referral Form available on our website.
- Second Look Screening:
- For previously tested students who were found ineligible but have current data.
- Review by the local school eligibility team for potential alternative assessments.
Parental Involvement
Parents play a vital role in this process. Referrals for testing can be made through the parent referral window in September. It’s important to note that requests received after this period will be considered in the following school year.
Our commitment is to nurture the potential of every gifted student, providing them with the challenge and stimulation they need to thrive.
